TAMPA – Six months into the 2012 fiscal year, passenger and revenue numbers at Tampa International Airport are on the rise compared to the same period in 2011.
Overall, the airport saw a 1.1 percent increase in passengers in the first six months of FY2012 compared to the first half of FY2011. International traffic is up 19.8 percent year over year for the same period, thanks in part to new flights to Cuba and a growth in passengers on British Airways and Canadian travelers.
International traffic is likely to continue to grow, with the launch of nonstop service to Zurich, Switzerland this month on Edelweiss Air, a Star Alliance member.
Net revenues are up 3.6 percent, or about $3 million, over last year, due in part to increased revenue from car rentals, parking and concessions. The airport has already introduced 15 new concessions concepts, including Green Iguana at Airside A and Swarovski Crystal in the main terminal. The Swarovski store is generating four times more daily revenue than the space’s previous tenant. Another seven new concepts are set to launch by the end of May.
Those numbers were presented to the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority board at its monthly meeting on May 3.
“This shows that our ‘Tampa Turnaround Plan’ is working,” said airport CEO Joe Lopano. Lopano said he believes the trend will continue as the region’s economy recovers and the airport implements new management strategies.
“We started the year with a very aggressive budget for FY 2012 and promised to increase the airport’s bottom line by $5 million versus the previous year,” Damian Brooke, vice president of business planning told the board. “We’re right on schedule to meet and possibly exceed that target.”
