Tampa International Airport First Florida Airport to implement CNG

March 3, 2011

TAMPA – Tampa International Airport today announced the board approval of the lease and concession agreement with Clean Energy granting them the right to develop, design, construct, operate and maintain a “turnkey” Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel facility at the airport for a term of 20 years.

This facility represents the next step in an ongoing initiative to expand the Aviation Authority’s use of green technology for the benefit of the community. While CNG vehicles are already highly regarded as environmentally-friendly as a means of reducing CO2 output, this facility is also expected to result in significant fuel cost savings for the Authority of over one million dollars in the first five years. Additional revenue is anticipated when the station is open to the public.

Working with Clean Energy and TECO Energy, this station represents one of many partnerships the Airport is developing to further green community initiatives. The project joins the already successful expanded recycling program and reclaimed water initiative that the Airport implemented in recent years.

“Our goal is to move Tampa International Airport to the forefront in the introduction of new technology,” said Joe Lopano CEO of Tampa International Airport. “We have been leaders in environmental efforts and will continue to look for new and innovative ways to be a more efficient and a more sustainable enterprise.”

TPA will be the first airport in Florida to implement CNG.
